Video shows reckless driver crashing near construction crew after fleeing traffic stop, deputies say

An Arkansas man was arrested this week in Martin County after deputies said he fled law enforcement at speeds exceeding 100 mph, later crashing near a nighttime construction crew.

A video posted on the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page showed the dramatic end of the pursuit of the driver, identified as Cody Allen Nance, 33,

The sheriff’s office said they called off their initial pursuit due to safety concerns.

However, the sheriff’s office helicopter continued to maintain a distant visual of Nance as he entered St. Lucie County.

“As his high-speed recklessness persisted, Nance jumped back on I-95 driving southbound in the northbound lanes, narrowly missing oncoming vehicles,” according to the sheriff’s office post on Facebook.

The sheriff’s office said their helicopter crew alerted ground crews that Nance was on his way back into Martin County along Martin Highway where a night construction crew was working.

Deputies were able to deploy Stop Sticks to slow Nance down before he reached the construction site.

“Due to his excessive speed, Nance overcorrected when he hit the stingers and slammed into a water truck while construction workers watched from the side of the road,” the sheriff’s office said.

Nance got out of the vehicle and was taken into custody by deputies. He was taken to the hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

The sheriff’s office said he faces charges of fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license, petit theft, failure to register a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and breaking and entering parole violation.

None of the work crews or other drivers were injured during the incident.
