A West Palm Beach native was honored this month for his book that analyzes the problems facing Black men in America.Elvin Dowling published his book "Still Invisible? Examining America's Black Male Crisis" in January 2020. Last week, Dowling won the Florida Book Award, which means his book will now be on display at the Florida governor's mansion.He spent five years interviewing and researching subjects for his book. The author spoke with Black political leaders, doctors, attorneys, convicted felons, stay-at-home fathers and more to write the book.Dowling said the common thread among these 15 Black men from around the country is they all at one point in their lives have experienced racism.U.S. Rep. A restaurant along PGA Boulevard is trying to drum up business during The Honda Classic by offering a secret Honda Classic drink menu.The Cooper says they have five new craft cocktails that are sure to tantalize every golf fan's tastebuds."This year for The Honda Classic we decided to change our menu, and we are doing five features that are all related to golf," said Tenaette Schumaker, lead bartender at The Cooper."[sic] We create this menu because it will entice folks to come in. The Honda Classic couldn't happen without the help of nearly 1,200 volunteers who donate hours of time to make the tournament run smoothly and give guests the best possible experience.One volunteer has spent years going the extra mile to make the PGA Tour event extra special for the youngest golf fans.That's why Tom Gibbs, 75, was awarded volunteer of the year, after tournament organizers felt his good heart deserved special recognition.Gibbs can often be found staking his claim in the shadiest spot by the 11th hole, stepping out when it's time to silence the crowd.He gets a great view of the players. Matt Jones tied the course record at PGA National in the first round of the Honda Classic on Thursday with a 9-under 61. Brian Harman shot a 61 at PGA National in the second round of the 2012 Honda Classic. Tiger Woods shot a 62 in the final round that same year. Until Thursday, they were the only rounds of 8 under or better since the event moved to PGA National 15 years ago.
